Overlijdensbericht en herinneringsplaats van

Leo G. Kroon

04-11-195814-09-2016
It is with deep regret that we have learned of the sudden death of our colleague Leo Kroon.

Leo G. Kroon worked as a Professor of Quantitative Logistics at Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM), and as a Logistics Consultant in the Department of Process Quality and Innovation at Netherlands Railways (NS).

During his long-standing career of more than 32 years at RSM, he served in many positions and roles: as scientific researcher, assistant professor, associate professor, and full professor, ERIM Member and ERIM Fellow, supervisor to many master students and PhD candidates, and as chairman of the Examination Board.

Leo was instrumental in building a world-class research group on decision support tools for the planning and real-time operations control of public transport systems. He taught applied mathematics to the first year bachelor students, and quantitative logistics to bachelor and master students, and PhD candidates.

He was a member of the NS team that won the very prestigious INFORMS Edelman Award 2008 for its model-based contributions to the development of the 2007 NS timetable. He was the recipient of the 2008 ERIM Impact Award and he received the Umbra Erasmi.

We will remember Leo as a brilliant and erudite colleague who was committed to his students, PhD candidates, and colleagues he worked with. He was honest, humble, and gifted with a subtle sense of humour.

Our thoughts are with his partner Cisca.

Since 1999, Leo was a loyal member of our institute, and fellow of the ERIM LIS programme. For many at ERIM who worked with Leo we have lost a personal friend and a source of inspiration as well as an excellent colleague and dedicated researcher.
He was a star in his field, contributing both to academic excellence and societal impact through his work on the development of decision support tools for the planning and real-time operations control of public transport systems.
On behalf of ERIM, I am wishing his partner Ciska, his colleagues, PhD students and friends within our research community the strength to cope with this tragic loss. He will be missed dearly.

Leo was a gentle, humble, brilliant colleague. We have been honored to serve with him in the CASPT (Conference for Advanced Systems for Public Transport) community. In fact, the CASPT he organized last year in Rotterdam, one of the very best CASPT ever, was still so vivid in our minds: the hotel he so carefully picked, the amazing conference dinner on a cruise ship, and of course, the thought provoking and enlightening conference sessions he put together. His passing is a big loss to the community. Our condolences to his family and friends. Leo will be dearly missed.

Ik herinner me vele gesprekken met o.a.

With all my sympathy for those who miss him, too.
