Beste familie en vrienden van Gerrit,
Nog maar een paar weken geleden beantwoordde Gerrit zijn werkmail nog. Daaruit werd inderdaad duidelijk dat zijn gezondheidstoestand danig was verslechterd. Evengoed komt zijn overlijden voor mij als relatieve buitenstaander toch als een verrassing. Ook ik kijk met genoegen terug op onze samenwerking, en de constructieve manier waarop Gerrit er altijd in zat. Hij was een prettig mens.
Ik hoop dat dit condoleance register, met al zijn mooie woorden over Gerrit, voor jullie een troost zal zijn. Bovenal hoop ik dat jullie troost vinden in jullie eigen goede herinneringen aan Gerrit. Onderstaand gedicht van Toon Hermans verwoord het wat mij betreft mooi.

Nu 't rouwrumoer rondom jou is verstomd,
de stoet voorbij is, de schuifelende voeten,

Mijn condoleances gaan uit naar Gerrit's familie, vrienden en collega's en wens hen veel sterkte in het verwerken van dit verdriet. Wat zal blijven zijn de goede herinneringen aan de begeleiding die ik van Gerrit heb mogen ontvangen tijdens mijn studie en vooral de goede en vriendelijke samenwerking tijdens mijn afstudeeronderzoek in Bolivia. Dank je wel, Gerrit.

Gerrit, go well and spread the message of irrigation up there. I will sorely miss you for your wisdom, matter-of-fact style of dealing with thorny issues and administrative head aches, and good humour. You could be tough at times, but always well-intended and interspersed with a joke or twinkle in your eyes. A tough cookie, but a pleasant and well-meaning one. You saved our IWE group at the University from several bankrupcies in the past couple of decades, and in the past couple of years when you went over to the other side of the counter (joining the management) you enlightened quite a few bean counters with your typical straightforward back of the envelope financial management advises. You passed away fighting a battle you couldn't win. Yet you died dressed in full shining armour. I wish the family and friends my warmest condolences and wish them luck in finding consolation and strength in the face of this devastating news.

I have fond memories of his lectures, our conversations, the times we shared in the Nieuwlanden as well in Lumen and when we worked together. He was a great person, always approachable, full of humour, valuable knowledge and great teaching skills. My sincere condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.

Wat een droevig nieuws. Ik heb Gerrit ervaren als een toegankelijke en vrolijke docent met praktische en onderhoudende vakken. Heel veel sterkte met het verwerken van dit verlies.

Deeply touch by the loss of Gerrit. I have spoken with him very few times, but in our conversations I have value very much his experienced opinion and his sense of humour. I will miss very much his personality within WUR.
